A six-month-old passed away in hospital this morning after being shot five times in Chicago yesterday.

Jonylah Watkins' father Jonathan was changing her diaper in a car when a gunman approached and opened fire. She was rushed to hospital in serious-to-critical condition.

The baby girl reportedly underwent about five hours of surgery to treat wounds to her liver, leg, shoulder, lung and bowel or intestine. She passed away this morning.

"The city of Chicago should be outraged that in our city a six-month-old baby could be shot and killed," Reverend Corey Brooks, who is acting as the family spokesman, was reported as saying.

The Chicago community is rallying to track down Jonylah's killer.  A $6,000 reward is being offered.

Mr Watkins was also injured during the shooting and remained in hospital in critical condition as of this morning.
